Six steps to help you cut down on conflict

Six steps to help you cut down on conflictIf you’re not careful, poor communication can turn minor arguments into full-blown — and unhealthy — clashes. We’ve identified simple but powerful communication techniques you can use to help prevent normal disagreements from escalating into anything worse:

  • Express your viewpoints directly without accusing and confronting the other person.
  • Don’t just look at what’s being discussed, but also at what is going on between you and the other person.
  • Ask for time to consider the other person’s viewpoint before you respond.
  • Summarize the other person’s concerns to be sure you understand.
  • Try arguing the other person’s position as thoroughly and thoughtfully as possible.
  • Seek a workable compromise.
